Things to Do in Broken Bow & Hochatown — A Local's Guide

Broken Bow, Oklahoma packs more into one corner of the Ouachita Mountains than most destinations twice its size: a legendary state park, one of the clearest lakes in the region, a trout river, and the ever-growing playground of Hochatown. This is our local's guide — written from Pine Lake Resort, where all of it sits minutes from our front door. (Prefer paper? Download the printable PDF below.)

Beavers Bend State Park

The crown jewel. Beavers Bend State Park wraps around the Mountain Fork River with hiking trails for every level, horseback riding, the Forest Heritage Center museum, a Nature Center with ranger programs, and the kind of pine-and-river scenery that put Broken Bow on the map. Fly fishermen come from all over for the trout waters below the dam. Give it a full day minimum — it's five minutes from Mi Vida Loca at Pine Lake Resort, so many of our guests give it several.

Hochatown Attractions

Hochatown is Broken Bow's playground, and it keeps growing: the 29,000-square-foot Maze of Hochatown, zip-lining, ATV tours, gem mining, escape rooms, go-karts, axe throwing, a petting zoo and rescue center, plus wineries, breweries, and a distillery for the grown-ups' evening out. It's the easiest kind of family day — pick two or three, break for pizza, and be back at the cabin for the hot tub by dark. Everything here sits within about ten to fifteen minutes of Mi Vida Loca at Pine Lake Resort — close enough to do the Maze in the morning and be back at the fishing ponds by lunch.

Where to Eat

Hochatown's restaurant row covers everything from smokehouse plates to wood-fired pizza — local favorites include Abendigos Grill, the Blue Rooster, and Grateful Head Pizza, with new spots opening every season. Most of restaurant row is within about ten to fifteen minutes of the cabin — and on the night nobody wants to leave the porch, Pine Lake Resort's seasonal food court delivers straight to Mi Vida Loca.

Broken Bow Lake & the Mountain Fork River

Broken Bow Lake is famous for remarkably clear water — boat rentals, swimming, and coves worth a full afternoon of exploring. Below the dam, the Mountain Fork River offers kayaking, float trips, and year-round trout fishing. Both are within about five to ten minutes of Mi Vida Loca, and our stocked catch-and-release fishing ponds at Pine Lake Resort make a perfect warm-up for the kids before the real river.

Broken Bow by Season

Summer is lake season — clear water, boat days, and s'mores under the stars. Fall turns the Ouachitas into one of the region's best foliage shows, with October hiking that feels stolen from a postcard. Winter means quiet trails, trout fishing, fireplace evenings, and the best cabin rates of the year. Spring wakes the river up — wildflowers, float trips, and everything blooming. There's no wrong month; our free monthly Adventure Guides map out two full days for whichever one you pick, with every stay at Mi Vida Loca.
